Sometimes antique teak furniture can have streaks on the surface. One problem that could cause streaks is soap residue, especially if an oil soap was used. If that's the case, you should be able to rinse the streaks off with water. Don't use terry cloth, though, in case the loops snag a splinter. Also, dry the wood immediately.

Grime buildup or melted wax could be the culprit behind dirt on your teak furniture. In this case, make a solution of one part sudsy ammonia and eight parts tepid water. Wipe the solution on with a dampened rag and off with a dry rag, following the wood grain. Rinse with a solution of vinegar and water, and allow the wood to dry naturally. Test the solution on an inconspicuous area of the furniture first.

For regular maintenance of your teak furniture, you should only have to dust it regularly with a soft cloth. Every now and again, you can mix a mild detergent with tepid water. Wipe a dampened rag across, moving with the grain, and then dry with a rag.

To prevent damage, never place planters directly on the wood. Moisture can warp the surface. Likewise, use coasters for drinks. Finally, avoid placing the furniture so it's in direct sunlight, which can alter the coloration and even dry out the wood.
